  • Grade 3: Our Country - Our people come from all over the world, and they make our country great. Draw a picture of the world, showing the United States and the land your ancestors came from. If they were always here, show where.

Grades 4-8 Art and Essay/Poetry Themes

  • Grade 4: The Founding of our Nation - We fought a War for Independence, led by George Washington. Revolutionary war battles were fought right here in New York. Thousands of Americans died to secure our freedom and our liberty. How do we remember them and continue what they started?

  • Grade 5: The Growth of our Nation - We fought the War of 1812 against the British, and fought other foreign powers in other places to keep our Nation free and independent. Our Capital was invaded and burned. Many battles were fought right here in New York. Thousands of our soldiers are buried within New York City. How do we remember their sacrifice, and celebrate our freedom?

  • Grade 6: Preserving Our Nation - We fought a great Civil War to keep our Nation together, and brought an end to slavery here. A million Americans were killed or wounded, including President Abraham Lincoln. We celebrate Memorial Day to remember them, and President’s Day to remember Lincoln and Washington. How do we honor what they did?

  • Grade 7: Defending Our Nation - We fought in two World Wars and with the United Nations in Korea to protect our freedom and that of other countries around the world. The United States became a world leader in war and peace. We helped rebuild our friends and those who fought us. How does our freedom make us strong?

  • Grade 8: Defending Freedom - Over the last 50 years, we have fought to defend the freedom of others, risked our soldiers to keep the peace in other lands, and tried to make the world a safer place. Now we, and the freedom we enjoy, are under attack. How do we support freedom here and around the world?

  • Grade 9: The Price of Freedom - Since the Revolutionary War, over 1.1 million Americans have died in the Armed Forces. Memorial Day is dedicated to remember them and their sacrifice. There are over 25 million living veterans, and over 17.5 million war veterans. Compose or create a memorial to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, so that our nation, “Of the people, by the people and for the people” will endure.
